Sanayan sa Kakayahang Industriyal

Sanayan sa Kakayahang Industriyal (SKIL) was a fitting response to the widespread unemployment problem amongst productive youth and the growing demand for middle-level craftsmen here and overseas. Launched in 1983, SKIL benefits deserving out-of-school youth who are trained in various technical courses such as automotive mechanic and servicing, consumer electronics, structural welding, pipe-fitting, and small engine, refrigeration and air conditioning repair, among others.

The institutional partners of PSFI in implementing SKIL are Technical and Educational Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and TESDA-accredited institutions, Don Bosco Institute of Technology and STI Colleges, along with the participation of various industry partners, who provide on-the-job trainings, that include AG&P Co. of Manila, Aboitiz-Metaphil, Keppel Shipyard, Panasonic Communications and Honda Motors.

In recognizing new employment opportunities offered by information and communications technologies, PSFI also carries out ICT skills development programs. Dubbed the electronic Sanayan sa Kakayahang Industriyal (eSKIL), PSFI implemented its first program on ICT skills training in March 2006 to help the youth improve their chances of getting hired in call centres and animation art studios.

Leadership Enhancement and Attitude Development (LEAD)

PSFI provides Leadership Enhancement and Attitude Development (LEAD) workshops for its trainees to become acquainted with their role as PSFI scholars and the responsibilities that it entails. The three-day psycho-social sessions are conducted to mold the scholars’ character by imbibing the right values and work ethics to prepare them for the world of work. LEAD is now an integral part of all PSFI programs, promoting positive values to its beneficiaries such as teachers, housewives, farmers, out-of-school youths, and health workers.

Agriculture Research and Development

The Research and Development Team of PSFI aims to develop new and innovative methods to increase livelihood opportunities and income for communities. In 2019, the team initiated the development of a semi-commercial backyard aquaponic model. The study aims to investigate the production performance for both vegetable crops and aquaculture in the system. Economic feasibility of the system is a primary consideration as a marker for potential livelihood.

Aquaponics is a sustainable method of raising both fish and vegetables. This type of indoor farming is becoming more and more popular because one grows considerably more food with less water, land, and labor than traditional agriculture. It is a combination of recirculating aquaculture (raising fish in tanks) and hydroponics (soilless plant culture). In aquaponics, the nutrient-rich water from raising fish provides a natural fertilizer for the plants, the plants in turn help purify the water for the fish. Aquaponics can be used to sustainably raise fresh fish and vegetables for a family, to feed a village, or to generate profit in a commercial farming venture, year-round and in any climate.

Modifications were done to improve the semi-commercial backyard aquaponic model to accommodate data from previous cropping cycles suggesting the potentials of the system.

Shell Livewire is the global flagship enterprise development program of Shell. Its mission is to support local communities by funding their businesses and growing them with the goal of eventually housing them within the Shell business ecosystem. Shell LiveWIRE was launched in the Philippines in 2020.

Project COCONUT

On June in 2018, PSFI sealed a partnership with JNJ Oil Industries Inc. for the future of the coconut farmers in Quezon Province. With the Collaboration for Coconut Productivity and Nurturing Farmers Trade or Project COCONUT, PSFI aims to increase farmers’ income and economic self-sufficiency through organizing a cooperative, conducting seminars in managing coconut farms to improve yield, and setting up training programs for processing coconut-based products such as handicrafts and souvenir items. In addition, Shell will be purchasing biofuel raw materials from the farmer beneficiaries.

The pilot sites for the project are Unisan and Agdangan municipalities in Quezon Province, wherein project survey shows that 50% of the farmers rely exclusively on coconut farming and 86% earn below minimum wage. Additionally, most of the farmers are tenants or non-owners of the land they farm.
